Wantagh, Seaford community gatherings are Saturday

Saturday, June 4 is a day to mark on your calendar with big community events planned in Wantagh and Seaford.

The Wantagh Lions Club is hosting its second annual Community Picnic at Wantagh Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Whether rain or shine, the event holds promise of kid-friendly activities, live performances and appearances from local organizations. Guests should bring their own picnic baskets.

Lions Club President Gregg Markin said he was very happy with the results of the first picnic last year. Due to more organizations getting involved, he expects this year’s to be much bigger calling it an “all-time picnic” for the community.

“There are a lot of clubs and organizations,” he said. “So this is great for people to meet one another and have fun.”

In attendance will be Wantagh Public Library, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Junior Chamber, the Preservation Society, Wantagh Auto Body, Wantagh Fire Department, and the Miss Wantagh Court. There will be performances by St. Frances Theatre Group, Wantagh High School Pep Band, Wantagh High School Choir and Dance Unlimited.

At a recent Lions Club meeting, member Julie Sullivan noted that nothing is for sale at this picnic. It’s not about making money, but rather about bringing the community together for fun, free activities. “Families can come down, play some games, and have fun at no cost,” she said.

Some of those activities include an egg toss, face painting, volleyball games, a balloon toss, and the first “Black vs. Gold” tug-of-war. Wantagh Auto Body is donating a blow-up slide for the event. The Fire Department will also bring its smoke house for children to enjoy.

That evening, the Seaford Wellness Council is holding the first Seaford Community Barbecue from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will be in the parking lot of the Seaford Historical Museum.

The Wellness Council will be joined by the Chamber of Commerce and Seaford Historical Society. Seaford residents are invited to come for hamburgers, hot dogs and live music.

“We’re trying to do something around this time of year to bring the community together,” said Michael DiSilvio, president of the Seaford Wellness Council. “We’d like to meet with individuals to make them aware of what we do.”

Lucie Dean, an officer at the Wellness Council, also hopes to reach out to the community to let them know about the organization at the barbecue. Mainly, the Wellness Council members are excited to do something nice for the community. Residents are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. The rain date is Sunday.
