W.H. Historical Society launches permanent display

The West Hempstead Historical Society recently celebrated achievement of one of its long-standing goals of establishing a permanent display area at the West Hempstead Public Library.

The display, which is featured on the main floor wall between the young adult alcove and video collection, will be changed quarterly to take advantage of archived materials honoring the small hamlet.

The first subject of the display, “Chestnut Street School,” opened in September commemorating the school, which will celebrate its 100th birthday in January 2013. December’s display featured the “Trains of West Hempstead,” highlighting the long history of train service to the community and an exhibit of archived photos. Future displays will include “What’s in a Name?” “History of Hall’s Pond,” and “West Hempstead High School.”

The Society also produced a library video show last spring and is currently in the planning stages of a children’s show featuring artifacts and machines from years past. There is also a similar display located at the West Hempstead post office, where there is a year-long exhibit.

Society President John Shaud welcomes all new participants and memorabilia donations at meetings on the third Wednesday of each month, from September to June, at 11 a.m. at the library.
