Body Mapping
The exhibit commemorates the opening of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University. Works by contemporary artists, Tina Blondell, Giedre Montvila, K.C. (Kaethe) Kauffman, and Eileen Senner are featured, whose imagery deals with marking the human body. Each artist draws upon cultural and societal issues of body image and incorporates traditions such as Mehndi and ta moko practices of superimposing interlacing spiral markings on painted portraits in their work. Eastern Shores
The new exhibit explores the work of eight artists who deal with themes connected to the water, curated by artist Marcia Widenor. Selections include works by Barbara Andrus, Elise Kaufman, John Arden Knight, Dawn Lee, Dorothy Kerper Monnelly, Helen Tory, Arden Scott, and Mac Wells. Through July 15. Hillwood Art Museum, C.W. Edward Weston: Life Work
The exhibit surveys the 50-year career of a giant of 20th-century photography. The photographs of Edward Weston (1886-1958) capture the rhythms, patterns, and interconnections between nature and human experience. Weston’s photographs are renowned for their sensuous print quality and for the rich black and white scale the photographer achieved during printing. Through July 24. Kindertransport
This remarkable exhibit describes, through documents and photographs, the experience of the approximately 10,000 Jewish children brough to safety in Britain from their homes in Eastern Europe. Richard Avedon: Photographer of Influence
A retrospective of the career of photographer Richard Avedon, who worked in New York from the 1950s through the 21st century. Robert Hite: Imagined Histories
Sculptures sited among Hudson Valley landscapes are seen in this exhibit. Hite is a sculptor, painter and photographer whose work reflects nature and the surrounding landscape. From 2006 to 2010, he installed and photographed a series of mixed/media architectural sculptures called Imagine Histories: Hudson Valley Landscapes. The exhibition includes a sculpture and black and white photographs from the series. Through Sept. 4.
