The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of Nassau County, which will stay in effect until 7 p.m. tonight.

Heavy snow is expected today, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours, with accumulations up to five to eight inches predicted for the area. Snow will continue into Tuesday, and then change to sleet and freezing rain by Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service warned that reduced visibility — down to a quarter mile or less at times — and snow-covered roadways will create hazardous travel today. It said drivers should limit travel, and keep a flashlight, food and water in their car in case of an emergency. Additionally, the service advises motorists to reduce speed while driving and allow for more space than usual between cars.

A winter storm watch for the county has already been enacted for Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.
