Young Rockville Centre wrestlers exceed expectations

Posted

The eight members of Rockville Centre’s Cyclone Wrestling Club who entered the Massapequa Youth Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 9 at Massapequa High School, did so with modest goals. They wanted to test the skills that they learned and tirelessly drilled on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings since early December. Under coach Pete Shimkin, they competed against other wrestlers of similar ages and weights from youth wrestling programs in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester. If they applied their skills well, they thought they might possibly place (finish within the top four) in their classes.

The eight wrestlers more than exceeded those goals as all eight placed in what is considered one of the largest and most competitive youth wrestling tournaments in the area for grades 1-6. Nick Shimkin and Kyle Mosher each took 1st place, Greg Lethbridge and Shane Healy each placed 2nd, Steve Lupo and Jake Donofrio each garnered 3rd place and Chris Lucas and Jack Williams both took home 4th place honors.

Congratulations to each of these wrestlers — their performances are a testament to their hard work and training.
