Merokean Liz O’Shaughnessy created her own nonprofit corporation, CoLoKi Inc., to take over the Freeport Trailer Hiring Site for day laborers from Catholic Charities this past year. The trailer was in jeopardy of closing for good because of low attendance.

Sources close to Freeport Village Mayor Andrew Hardwick say he has not entirely killed plans to build a waste-to-energy incinerator in south Freeport, near the Merrick border. The incincerator would sit at the head of several tidal creeks leading into the nearby South Shore Estuary Reserve.
