Howard Kopel is running for his second term as county legislator of the 7th Legislative District. The Lawrence resident was elected in 2009 after defeating incumbent Jeff Toback. He is being challenged by Adam Moser, a Democrat from Hewlett. Moser is a former district court judge, who has a Rockville Centre legal practice. The 7th L.D. includes the Five Towns communities of Cedarhurst, Inwood, Hewlett, Lawrence and Woodmere, South Valley Stream, Oceanside, Island Park and portions of East Rockaway and Bay Park. more
This month we marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11. During and after the attacks, thousands of police and fire personnel responded to the scene regardless of whether they were working or not. They responded because that’s what we are all about. Our job is to help those in need. more
Update: 10:00 a.m. Four Brooklyn men brandishing knives and possibly a handgun invaded a North Bellmore home on Bellmore Avenue on Monday morning, around 9 a.m., and Nassau County police officers pursued the men into Merrick and later the Wantagh-Seaford area, firing shots at and wounding one of the suspects, authorities said. more
Updated: 5:15 p.m., Sept. 9, 2011: An eastbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a New Jersey man at the Merrick train station just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau County police were on hand to investigate with LIRR officials. more

For nearly two decades, the 5th Precinct’s Problem Oriented Policing unit has generally consisted of a group of four officers, who the community has become comfortable working closely with and, most importantly, trusted. That relationship changed severely last Monday, when three of the unit’s officers were reassigned to the 5th Precinct’s patrol unit, in compliance with a plan created by County Executive Ed Mangano to reduce the county’s costs and prevent further tax increases. more
Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal. more
