Our schools, our businesses, our town departments that maintain the roads and infrastructure and the village and county police units that patrol our streets all contribute to the quality of life we enjoy here on the South Shore.

As snow continues to fall on Long Island, the American Red Cross, as it does with each winter storm, has released tips for people to use. In addition to the snowfall, the Red Cross warns residents to be prepared for extreme cold and possible power outages.

Though temperatures plunged to bitter lows and much of the area was blanketed in 6 to 10 inches of snow last night and this morning, forcing widespread closings and making travel a gamble, there were no reports of storm-related losses of life and a relatively low number of power outages and calls to helplines, according to County Executive Ed Mangano this morning.
