Merrick’s 12-year-old Williamsport softball team, a.k.a. the "Merrick Madness," has won the New York State Softball Championship, defeating Garden City South 13-6 in Canastota, N.Y. on July 28, according to Bill Haddad, president of the Canastota Little League.

In a dramatic finish, the Valley Stream Little League’s senior division team held on for a win and captured the District 29 championship last week. The team beat Floral Park 13-12 on July 14 and now moves on to the Section 5 tournament.

The Calhoun girls’ varsity badminton team recently won the Nassau County Championship with a 4-3 victory over Great Neck South. The Calhoun girls finished the season with a 15-0 record –– and their second straight championship. Team Captain Christina Strezenec won the overall singles title, beating out all other Nassau badminton players in a two-day tournament. With this win, Strezenec became the only player in Calhoun history to win four county titles playing a varsity sport.
