Why go to see a classic play, especially if you’ve seen it before? Either you love the show, want to see a new interpretation, or admire the actors. The latest version of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” stars Scarlet Johansson as Maggie, wife of Brick and the younger son of Big Daddy Pollitt (ps) who’s dying of cancer. The recurring themes of the play include greed, superficiality, mendacity, sexual desire, repression, and death.

There’s a welcome new storm in town. Hurricane Norbert Leo Butz is blowing strong laughter and energy onstage at the Music Box Theatre. Although he doesn’t get to sing and dance (which he does extremely well) he uses his comedic skills to entertain and charm the audience in Theresa Rebeck’s new play Dead Accounts. As long as he is center stage, the play is entertaining. Conversely when Butz leaves the stage, it feels as if the air has been sucked out of it - but that’s for later.

Just days before 'super-storm' Sandy wreaked havoc on the East Coast, a wonderful revival of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf opened at The Booth Theatre. Mounted by The Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the show features Amy Morton and Tracy Letts in the iconic roles of Martha and George.

Another year comes to a close, one that saw a bit of change in Valley Stream, much of it for the good. In 2011, several key leadership positions changed hands. There was a new mayor, a new village clerk and two new school superintendents.
