Updated: 2:30 p.m.Nassau County Police and the U.S. Marshals Service cordoned off the Bellmore Post Office and surrounding streets at around 11 a.m. today, shutting down Merrick Road for several blocks to the east and west. According to police, a woman who U.S. marshals were tracking turned up at the mail facility with a bottle marked "sodium cyanide."

Economists tell us that the Great Recession of recent years is over. The economy is growing again, albeit ever so slowly. Long Island’s jobless rate has dropped to below 7 percent. Housing prices in a number of area neighborhoods are starting — mind you, starting — to creep up. And we hear anecdotal evidence that people are beginning to spend again.

Central Veterinary Associates of Valley Stream hosted an all-day fundraising clinic on June 30 as part of a nationwide effort to vaccinate dogs against the canine influenza virus, H3N8, and support the National Education for Assistance Dog Services to provide dogs for the deaf and disabled. The event generated about $1,500.

Merrick resident and CEO of Long Beach Medical Center Douglas Melzer was recently named chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, the association that represents Long Island’s 24 not-for-profit and public hospitals. His two-year term will expire in June 2012. The CEOs from each of the member hospitals comprise the board of directors.
