District 24 proposed 2010-11 budget

Proposed budget: $26,617,552 — anncrease of $457,579 or 1.75 percent

Tax Levy: $18,681,912 — a decrease of $15,982 or 0.1 percent

Tax Impact: Average homeowner would pay $23 less in elementary school taxes next year.

Contingency: The district would have to cut $457,579. Some possible program cuts could include music, full-day kindergarten and outdoor education, as well as the elimination of field trips and community use of schools. A paving project and elevator installation at the Brooklyn Avenue School would also be put off for a future budget.

State Aid: District 24 will receive slightly more than $5 million under the governor’s proposed state budget. That is a decrease of about $700,000.

About the budget: The budget maintains all current programs in the district. The increase of 1.75 percent is the lowest in more than a decade. The district will be using $2.35 million from its unreserved fund balance.

Board of Education: Incumbents Tony Iadevaio, Frank Nuara and Larry Trogel are each running unopposed for their seats. Terms are three years.

Voting Information: Tuesday, May 18, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brooklyn Avenue, Robert W. Carbonaro and William L. Buck schools and Corona Avenue Firehouse.
