Merrick volunteer firefighters assisted a stranded motorist on the Meadowbrook Parkway.

A massive storm dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the Merrick-Bellmore area from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour. more

A leak in a second-floor bathroom at the Cornwell Avenue School in West Hempstead flooded the building and damaged floor and ceiling tiles. The water also destroyed the gymnasium floor, lifting it up to three feet in some places. Repairs and renovations are expected to be completed by the middle of August.

Sept 4: Fears of extensive flooding, power outages and property damage fizzled on Friday as Hurricane Earl passed far enough out to sea that Nassau County suffered little more than scattered beach flooding. Even Jones Beach State Park, where extensive flooding was reported, had some areas open for swimming today and the Stone Temple Pilots concert planned for tonight at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater will take place as scheduled. more
