I was disappointed by the decision of the state’s financial oversight board, the Nassau County Interim Finance Authority, to take over Nassau County’s finances.

Economists tell us that the Great Recession of recent years is over. The economy is growing again, albeit ever so slowly. Long Island’s jobless rate has dropped to below 7 percent. Housing prices in a number of area neighborhoods are starting — mind you, starting — to creep up. And we hear anecdotal evidence that people are beginning to spend again.

The Nassau County Legislature is on the verge of repealing the controversial energy tax, which adds 2.5 percent to the cost of electricity, natural gas, home heating oil, propane and firewood. Most Republican candidates vowed during their election campaigns that they would eliminate this tax if they won.

As it turns out, we have a new Nassau County executive. Democrat Thomas Suozzi conceded defeat to Republican challenger Ed Mangano last week. Suozzi lost by a mere 386 votes.

Residents of Lakeview were on edge last week after Nassau County police announced that three men had assaulted two other men walking on Woodfield Road on Nov. 1, possibly because one victim was a cross-dresser.
