Allison Lutz spent many summer days on her grandfather William Lutz’s boat that he kept at the Alpha Sigma Boat Club in south Bellmore. Though he died 20 years ago, the family has continued to dock boats there, and it has always held a special place in Lutz’s heart. When her boyfriend of 12 years, Tom Ruggiero, 35, proposed on Valentine’s Day in 2010, the Beach Street club seemed like the obvious choice to get married. more

Rainstorm inundates Merrick-Bellmore

A massive storm dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the Merrick-Bellmore area from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour. more

Bellmorite launches 100-mile charity ride

On most any summer weekend, it’s easy to find sunbathers soaking up rays at Long Island’s many beaches, but whether they have taken the necessary steps to protect their skin isn’t as evident. Some 100 million Americans suffer from skin cancers and diseases, according to the American Skin Association. That’s why Bellmorite Edward Diller, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization, has launched the Pan Long Island Challenge to raise awareness about skin disorders as well as money for research. more

Long Islanders looking to escape the heat without a day at the beach need look no further than Bellmore.
