Two of Baldwin’s most prominent acronymic organizations — the Civic Association, or BCA, and the Chamber of Commerce, or BCC — combined forces last week on their largest-scale joint project to date. Although the two groups have paired up on several ventures in the past, and often find their interests dovetailed, last week’s Cash Mob promotion marked the official start of what everyone hopes will be a beautiful friendship.

The return of a number of whimsical scarecrows to Baldwin’s streets was a welcome sign to many in the hamlet. The scarecrows — entries in a combination contest/civic pride movement initiated by the Baldwin Civic Association on Oct. 20 — signaled that, for some at least, life was beginning to settle down.

In the four years that Charles Dickens has lived on Woodside Avenue, he has had to deal with two major floods. The first time, he wasn’t prepared. Having been told that his home was not in a flood zone, he had no flood insurance, and his homeowner’s policy did not cover the damage to his den and basement. He had to replace the carpet and furniture and restore the walls in both rooms.

The Baldwin Civic Association rallied the troops on a rainy May 5 for flower planting along Grand Avenue. The event was tied to a civic activism holiday called Join Hands Day and saw a contingent of kids getting their hands dirty to beautify a series of planters that BCA co-president Linda Degen said, “ran right through Baldwin.” The green-thumbed youths planted an estimated 10 flats of Marigolds in accordance with Baldwin’s designation as “Marigold City.” Some of the flowers were provided by the Town of Hempstead and others were donated by residents and local businesses.

The Baldwin Civic Association addressed its members’ six most popular questions at an upbeat meeting on April 26 at Baldwin High School. After hearing a presentation from Board of Education Trustees B.A. Schoen and Laura Williams encouraging everyone to participate in the school board election and budget vote May 15, 50 or so BCA members sat down in six groups to brainstorm Baldwin’s hottest topics.
