Of the 904 aboard, 675 perished in the attack. In the final moments before the ship sank into the frigid Atlantic, four chaplains — two Protestant, one Jewish and one Catholic — linked arms and recited prayers to give hope to the dying men, after they had passed out lifejackets to as many as they could — all the while forsaking their own safety. The four, often referred to as “the Immortal Chaplains,” ultimately died. more

Dozens of Baldwin High School students came out for the Senior Banquet on Thursday, Jan. 18. This year’s theme was Casino Night, and these students came dressed to impress. Complete with dice and playing card décor, the casino night event was on these seniors won’t soon forget. more

Few people have had such a profound and lasting impact on the Baldwin community as Laura Curran. Throughout her 20 years as a resident, she has consistently worked to enhance the lives of those who call Baldwin home, from her time on the school board to her tenure on the Nassau County Legislature. Even before she made history by being elected Nassau’s first female county executive on Nov. 7, she was a dedicated public servant who worked for the betterment of her hometown and surrounding communities. For all these reason and more, the Herald proudly names Curran, herself a one-time Herald editor, its 2017 Person of the Year. more
