The Nassau County Legislature passed a measure to redraw the current legislative map in a vote on Tuesday. Ten Republicans voted for the plan, while seven Democrats voted against it. Legislator Denise Ford, a Republican from Long Beach, was the lone dissenting voice in her party.

Under a Republican plan to redraw the Nassau County Legislature’s district lines, Democratic Legislator David Denenberg, of Merrick, would see his district –– the 19th –– merged with Legislator Joseph Scannell’s district –– the 5th. In effect, Democrats would lose a seat. A State Supreme Court justice, however, placed a temporary restraining order on the plan on Thursday, effectively preventing it from taking effect until the matter is decided in court. A quick look at the history of the county Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature was formed on May 24, 1994, after U.S. District Court Judge Arthur Spatt had ruled in 1993 that the county’s longstanding Board of Supervisors was unconstitutional because it violated the Constitution’s one-person, one vote rule. A 19-district Legislature was created to replace the Board of Supervisors. The Legislature’s first election took place in November 1995, and legislators took office for the first time on Jan. 1, 1996. more
