A federal jury Thursday convicted Michael Costanza, 60, of Merrick, a retired Long Island Rail Road transportation manager and North Merrick Fire Department commissioner, of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. Costanza now faces a maximum of 55 years in prison.

North Merrick School District Superintendent David Feller will become president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents on June 1. With the position, he will also assume a spot on the Commissioner’s Advisory Council of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, which meets three to four times a year with the New York State Education Department commissioner, currently Dr. John King Jr.

Third-graders at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick gathered at the front entrance of the school, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi on Wednesday afternoon. When Yamaguchi, 40, entered the school minutes later, she was met by an exuberant greeting from the students to welcome her.

Nassau County Police are warning young people to be on the lookout for a white van after three teens were approached in separate incidents by the driver over the past week in the North Merrick-North Bellmore and East Meadow areas. The teens were asked whether they wanted a ride. The teens ran home and informed their parents, who called police.
Authorities said the teens did the right thing by running away and letting police know.
