Nassau County has one of the nation’s highest rates of breast cancer, and more than 1,200 women in the county were diagnosed with the disease from 2004 to 2008, according to the State Department of Health’s New York State Cancer Registry.

I am nothing if not trendy. On Oct. 7, I underwent surgery for breast cancer following a diagnosis two weeks earlier. It is, after all, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wouldn’t think of having cancer any other time of the year.
