Nassau County officials have long attempted to monitor the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders, making sure they are not near their victims' residences, schools or workplaces. Now, county probation officials are seeking to expand that oversight by requiring Level 3 offenders to wear a GPS device so that their location will be known at all times.

Republican Chris Browne appears to have scored a stunning victory in the Conservative Party primary yesterday, knocking Nassau County Legislator Joe Scannell (D-Baldwin) off the line after receiving 102 write-in votes, in unofficial results Wednesday.

For the past several months, both incumbent Nassau County Legislator Joe Scannell (D- Baldwin) and his Republican challenger, Chris Browne from Rockville Centre, have each claimed to embody Conservative Party ideals. But now it’s up to 5th District Conservative voters to decide who will represent them in the November election.

Millions of iPhones and BlackBerrys are being used every second, and few adults in Nassau County are without a cell phone of some kind. These devices enable more than phone calls. We can type text messages, read e-mails, connect to the Internet and type Twitter messages and Facebook updates. We can find out where the nearest pizzeria, gas station or hospital is. We can check the weather. We can get a movie review, find the closest theater where that movie is playing and when the next show starts, and then get directions to the theater. All on the phone.
