The scene at the Baldwin Firehouse was one of coordinated chaos on Saturday. As snow fell, roughly a dozen Girl Scouts from Baldwin Troop 2427 were hurrying here and there, gathering clothes, soaps, shampoos and gift cards, among other items, and boxing them for shipment to hurricane victims in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. Rebecca, a 19-year-old who lives in Baldwin Harbor with her disabled parents and two siblings, has slept on the first floor of her Sandy-damaged home since the storm hit in 2012.
‘We were in panic mode’
When it’s time for 19-year-old Rebecca to go to sleep, she does so on a living room couch in her Baldwin Harbor home. Her 21-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister are a few feet away in the dining room, where they sleep on mattresses. Rebecca’s parents, who are both disabled, spend most of their time upstairs as she runs the household. more

The Black & Red Motorcycle Club, with headquarters in Baldwin, organized its second annual Canned Food and Coat Drive this fall. On Nov. 23, the bikers donated the collected food, coats and household items to the Salvation Army and LI Cares.
