Mepham High School senior Steven Tsai was recently crowned New York state champion in the Poetry Out Loud competition, a national contest that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is planning to cut 13 teaching positions next school year. Before the district cuts these teachers, though, it must do everything in its power to save them. They are the people who give your children an education, not SMART Boards, not artificial-turf fields and not substitute-teachers.

A team of five Mepham High School students recently took first place at the Physics Olympiad at SUNY Farmingdale. The winning physicists were, from left, Werda Alam, Tara Panzarino, Mollie Bienstock, Josh Haimson and Bilal Siddiqui. They were joined by their teacher and coach William Leacock.

Teachers and administrators in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have agreed to voluntarily freeze their salaries for the 2011-12 academic year in order to avoid further budget cuts and preserve student programs. In all, the wage freeze will save the district $840,000, according to Central officials.

At a time when school taxes are high, the state is cutting school aid and everyone is trying to reduce spending, two Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District trustees have proposed placing a $3.5 million to $4.5 million bond on the May ballot to fund construction of three synthetic-turf football fields.

Jonathan Butler, a Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District trustee, made a motion at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting that the district place a $3.5 million to $4.5 million bond referendum on the ballot in May to fund construction of three synthetic-turf football fields at Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools. Dr. Matthew Kuschner, the board vice president, seconded the motion.
