Long Islanders looking to escape the heat without a day at the beach need look no further than Bellmore. The Long Island International Film Expo, hosted by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation, will return to the Bellmore Movies next week. The 14th annual film festival will kick off with a preview night on Thursday, July 7, and an opening night party on Friday, July 8, at 5 p.m. for all ticket holders.

Seniors and their dates gathered at homes across Bellmore-Merrick to prepare for prom last Thursday. The Basiles of Bellmore hosted about 20 Kennedy High School couples, who gathered to chat over food with their friends and classmates as parents snapped photos. The house, located on the water, made for a beautiful evening.

No one is sure precisely what the 2 percent tax-levy cap passed by the state last week will mean for Bellmore-Merrick’s four elementary districts and one high school district, but it could force the districts to cut student programming and lay off teachers in order to stay under the legal limit.

Lack of grant money couldn’t stop the Bellmore-Merrick Central District’s Midnight Madness. The fourth annual substance-free post-prom party, hosted by the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council, got under way last Thursday night at Zachary’s in East Meadow without a hitch.

Walking quickly down Bellmore Avenue, it’s easy to pass St. Mark the Evangelist Episcopal Church, but for those curious enough to enter the grounds through the wooden archway, a hidden gem awaits. The small parish will turn 100 in 2013 and has long boasted an expanse of open, untouched land, rare on the South Shore. Few were even aware of the space. That’s rapidly changing.

A North Bellmore man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated this past weekend, according to New York state police. Andrew Marsh, 22, was driving westbound on the Long Island Expressway and merged onto the Seaford-Oyster Bay Express (Route 135) south. While traveling on 135, Marsh lost control of his vehicle and collided with the guardrail on the thoroughfare’s right shoulder.
