To mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Bellmore and North Bellmore fire departments joined together to remember those who were lost. More than 100 firefighters gathered with the community at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Bellmore to pray for those lost and their families.

The Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks left many Americans in fear. In the early hours of that Tuesday morning, Bellmore-Merrick residents watched their TVs in horror as the World Trade Center fell, uncertain about what might follow. That day changed the lives of many in the Bellmores and Merricks, and continues to hold a place in the hearts and minds of local residents.

Theresa Policaro has made her home on Hewlett Lane in south Bellmore for more than 30 years, and so, she said, she was reluctant to leave her house when she was ordered to evacuate last Friday by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which ripped a swath of destruction across Long Island over the weekend.

Allison Lutz spent many summer days on her grandfather William Lutz’s boat that he kept at the Alpha Sigma Boat Club in south Bellmore. Though he died 20 years ago, the family has continued to dock boats there, and it has always held a special place in Lutz’s heart. When her boyfriend of 12 years, Tom Ruggiero, 35, proposed on Valentine’s Day in 2010, the Beach Street club seemed like the obvious choice to get married.

At midday on Saturday, many Bellmore-Merrick residents living south of Merrick Road were seen packing up their belongings and piling into their vehicles, headed to higher ground ahead of Hurricane Irene, as per the mandatory evacuation order issued by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano on Friday. Others said they were still making up their minds whether to stay or go. And still others insisted they would ride out the storm at home.
