A Queens man was arrested Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. and charged with stealing money from a donation box at the Jaame Mafjid Mosque on Newbridge Road in North Bellmore. Nassau County Police arrested Ahmad Saeed, 48, after the suspect was caught on the mosque’s surveillance video.

The fifth annual Alex’s Run for a Reason fundraiser in honor of the late Alexandra Richardson, who died in 2006 of sudden unexplained death in childhood, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23, at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore.

Veterans, scouts, marching bands and Little Leaguers are set to take part in the Bellmores’ annual Memorial Day parade, which is scheduled to kick off on Monday, May 30, at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at the veterans monument at Newbridge Road Elementary School in North Bellmore and proceed south to the veterans monument in Bellmore Village. For several years, all that has stood at Newbridge Road School was the skeleton of a playground from years ago, but that all changed recently. On March 30, children and parents alike watched as the ribbon was cut away to open a brand-new playground at the site, an accomplishment that was two years in the making.

Newbridge Road Elementary School demonstrated compassion and generosity through the Student Council’s “January Jammies” program, which collects new pajamas for children and young adults in need. The pajamas were donated to Mercy First, an organization that benefits foster-care and group homes. Students enjoyed wearing their pajamas to school one recent Friday to celebrate the culmination of the program.

North Bellmore schools wrapped up their winter concerts this past week. Parents and community members alike were treated to choir and band numbers at all five district schools. Newbridge Road School had its concert on Monday, just before the holiday break. Under the direction of Lauren Alber and Dana Hirsch, students entertained the audience with a selection of festive and seasonal songs.

The Newbridge Road Elementary School PTA, student council representatives and their teacher advisers, Karen Collins, Michelle Hooker and Joan Slutsky, recently prepared 12 food baskets to present to families in need from the community. The project was the culmination of a food drive that the school took part in.

The fourth annual Alex’s Run For a Reason fundraiser took place this past Saturday at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore to great success.
About 500 people turned out to take part in the day’s activities, and the event raised more than $26,000.
