Schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to the snowstorm moving through the area. The Merrick, North Merrick and North Bellmore school districts will also be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22.

“The way you know a radish is ready to pick is that they show themselves,” Park Avenue Elementary School kindergarten teacher Robin Obey told first-graders last Friday morning.
Students eagerly dug through the dirt, pulling out radishes by the dozen and tossing them into a nearby basket. A garden bed over, other first-graders pinched at spinach plants, pulling off the tender leaves.
The class wasn’t taking place at a farm, but outside the school’s doors at Park Avenue’s community garden.

During a meeting last Thursday, the North Bellmore School District’s Committee to Explore Educational Options reinforced what Board of Education members said recently — a school will close. For nearly a half-hour, the CEOO then discussed why one of the six elementary schools must close.

The Park Avenue Elementary School PTA is seeking new playground equipment for the school after being told one year ago by an insurance company that renovations had to be made to maintain playground safety. But the PTA’s request for county grant money has hit a yearlong stall as the money winds its way through the legislative process.
