Sixth-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School in North Bellmore recently turned out four performances of “Alice in Wonderland.” Students treated their parents and fellow classmates to a performance based on the Disney classic. The play was an adaptation of the movie as well as Lewis Carroll’s novels “The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass.” more

The NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick competition has been a staple in the North Bellmore School District’s phys-ed program for the past decade, but students have never made it past the Long Island Championships ––that was, until this year. Gunther second-grader Lauren Guitriago placed first at the Long Island Championships at the Met Life Stadium in New Jersey in December, which guaranteed her a spot in the national finals in Baltimore. more
By the end of the week, all Gunther Elementary School students will know what school they will attend next September. Though the students will no longer spend their days learning and bonding at Gunther, their legacy will be a permanent one left on the school. That was the hope that Principal Marie Testa had when the school developed the idea to literally mark the building’s walls with a lasting memory. more

The St. Catherine of Sienna School in Franklin Square and Sacred Heart Elementary School in North Merrick are among four Catholic schools in Nassau County that will close next June due to dwindling enrollment and funding. Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre announced the news on Dec. 5, in a public letter that is posted on the diocese’s website. more
Updated: Dec. 12, 2:13 p.m. After more than 50 years of educating South Shore children, Sacred Heart School in North Merrick is expected to close in June next year. The announcement was made on Dec. 6 by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Sacred Heart will be one of four Nassau County Catholic schools to close next year, including St. John Baptist de La Salle Regional School in Farmingdale, St. Catherine of Sienna School in Franklin Square and St. Ignatius Loyola School in Hicksville. more

Parents of children in Gunther Elementary School’s class of 2013 gathered on Wednesday after the announcement that their school would likely close at the end of this school year. Anger and sadness resonated through the group. Parents said they were particularly upset that their children would lose the chance to graduate with their lifelong friends from the school where they grew up. more
