The Park Avenue Elementary School PTA is seeking new playground equipment for the school after being told one year ago by an insurance company that renovations had to be made to maintain playground safety. But the PTA’s request for county grant money has hit a yearlong stall as the money winds its way through the legislative process.

More than 1,700 runners and walkers took to the streets of south Merrick on May 22 for the sixth annual Robbie’s Run, which has quickly become one of the Merrick-Bellmore community’s go-to events. In total, the event raised $48,000.

Veterans, scouts, marching bands and Little Leaguers are set to take part in the Bellmores’ annual Memorial Day parade, which is scheduled to kick off on Monday, May 30, at 9 a.m. The parade will begin at the veterans monument at Newbridge Road Elementary School in North Bellmore and proceed south to the veterans monument in Bellmore Village. When Dinkelmeyer Elementary School fifth-grader Andrew McInnis received a letter at home saying that he had been named one of the Top 10 young poets in the country, he didn’t think much of it. He didn’t even mention it to his Alpha teacher, Tillie McNamara. But a few weeks later McNamara made the announcement to the entire Alpha class and made sure the students realized the importance of the award.

For several years, all that has stood at Newbridge Road School was the skeleton of a playground from years ago, but that all changed recently. On March 30, children and parents alike watched as the ribbon was cut away to open a brand-new playground at the site, an accomplishment that was two years in the making.
