Long Island Democrats came out in force Monday night for a dinner fundraiser at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury that paid tribute to Carolyn McCarthy, of Mineola, for her 17 years representing Nassau County in Congress. The gala’s guest list included Democratic notables from the region and beyond, like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, and it likely netted hundreds of thousands of dollars for the party.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven, nonprofit charitable organization that raises money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at Calhoun High School on March 18, when more than 200 people will shave their heads “in solidarity” with children with cancer and raise money to eradicate childhood cancers.

The Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s hockey team, was not playing for conference standings or athletic trophies on the evening of Dec. 2 at Newbridge Arena in Bellmore. The squad was playing to bring the holiday season home to underprivileged children.

Each class at Wellington C. Mepham High School did battle for a cause last week, as an annual spirit event became a fundraiser for a cancer charity.
Battle of the Classes, which was organized by seniors in Chris Parren and Kerry Dennis’s Participation in Government class, was held in the Brookside School gymnasium on Nov. 14. The evening, filled with physical activity and Pirate pride, doubled as a fundraiser, with $3,815 collected for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
