Stan Stevens literally helped build south Bellmore. The tugboat operator assisted with the dredging of the land that is now the southern portion of the hamlet. Stevens had a hand in many land developments along the South Shore. That’s just one reason Bellmorite Christine Keller is lobbying to gain landmark status for Stevens’s former home on Bellmore Avenue. It was built in 1923 by Stevens and his father, Charles. Charles and his wife, Pauline Annie, lived in Freeport, where Charles ran the Bellmore Ferry Service to High Hill Beach. Pauline also managed the Breakers Hotel on the beach. more

Newbridge Road Elementary School demonstrated compassion and generosity through the Student Council’s “January Jammies” program, which collects new pajamas for children and young adults in need. The pajamas were donated to Mercy First, an organization that benefits foster-care and group homes. Students enjoyed wearing their pajamas to school one recent Friday to celebrate the culmination of the program. more
