Leon Drucker, a deeply rooted fixture in East Meadow who almost never missed a Fire Department event or high school football game, was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and was hailed by many as the community’s biggest supporter — its unofficial mayor — died on Oct. 6 after months of declining health. He was 73.

The morning of Sept. 11, 2015 began with an overcast sky, as Americans from coast to coast planned their day in remembrance of the darkest day in the history of the United States. This day, the 14th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, was not just significant for the milestone passing, but it offered another year of new hope for a better future with the continued progress of New York City’s financial district, and the daunting task of our military abroad, and our law enforcement back home in keeping our country safe.

East Meadow firefighters responded to a house fire on Van Buren Avenue, in East Meadow, on Monday afternoon, just before 1 p.m. Members of Ladder 617, followed by Engine 612, Ladder 619, Engine 4 and Engine 1, arrived on the scene, and “were confronted with zero visibility and a quickly advancing kitchen fire, now extending into the attic of the home,” said volunteer John O’ Brien Sr.
