The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is erecting a 9/11 memorial with ‘sacred remains’ from the World Trade Center. A group of Central District officials and students went to Hangar 17 at Kennedy Airport last week to inspect the rusted girder that will form the centerpiece of the monument. Above are, from left, Dan Christoffel, a retired Calhoun High School art teacher; Peter Gat, an art conservator with the Port Authority; John Scalisi, the Central District’s facilities director; Peter Miller, a Port Authority financial analyst; Dr. Henry Kiernan, the Central District superintendent; students Julie Schnaars and Patrick Lugauer; and John Boyle, a Central District English teacher.

Honoring, remembering 9/11 victims
Changing the venue for the East Rockaway 9/11 Memorial Service due to rain seemed like a small inconvenience last Friday evening, when almost 200 people filled Village Hall to honor, remember and pray for the victims of the tragedy that touched and, in some way, changed all of the survivors’ lives eight years ago at the World Trade Center. more
