The Freedom Party of East Rockaway elected its slate of officers at its second meeting on Oct.21 at the Commuters Club in East Rockaway. A set of by-laws was approved, and the new party began to chart a course towards the March 2011 elections. more

New zone approved in East Rockaway

The East Rockaway village board voted unanimously on Monday night to approve a new plan to rezone a portion of the industrial district into a commercial-recreation zone. The new plan focuses on the northern portion of the existing industrial zone, which includes the Berg properties, a CVS drug store and other buildings. more

Freedom Party conducts first meeting

The Freedom Party of East Rockaway held its first organizational meeting on Sept. 23 at the Commuter’s Club on Ocean Avenue in East Rockaway. The 19 attendees were welcomed by Richard Meagher, current deputy mayor of the village, and Village Trustee Irene Villacci. Meagher served as moderator for the evening and, after reviewing six different handouts, including proposed bylaws, he outlined four reasons for forming the Freedom Party of East Rockaway. more

Residents air gripes about disruptive kids

In a high school auditorium, you usually find groups of bustling adolescents sitting in the rows, but on Monday, parents gathered in the Lynbrook High School auditorium to voice their frustrations about what they describe as illegal activity among local youth. Lynbrook and East Rockaway officials, along with members of the Nassau County Police Department’s 4th Precinct, were in the hot seat as many residents complained about disruptive youth who, they said, hang out, drink and cause mischief near Waverly Avenue. more

Carrying on with East Rockaway village business

The village of East Rockaway’s regular board meeting for July was anything but regular or ordinary as a lone, empty mayor’s chair sat in the center of the dais, a grim reminder to all those attending of the recent passing of its leader, Mayor Ed Sieban. The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway took its first major steps on May 20 by electing its steering committee officers, announcing the appointment of its first task force team leader, adopting its mission statement, and authorizing such basic items as opening a bank account and a post office box. The Coalition for Youth in East Rockaway became an official organization within the village of East Rockaway on April 29, forming an unprecedented alliance between the village and the school district.
