Every day, nearly 50,000 vehicles illegally pass stopped school buses in New York state. According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee 2009 report, 69 students were injured between 2002 and 2004 by motorists illegally passing buses. One student was killed.

South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. Affected areas include the waters south of Bellmore, Merrick and Freeport.

According to new maps released by a redistricting task force and recently approved by the State Assembly and Senate, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Elmont and Franklin Square will become part of the new 22nd Assembly District, an area currently represented by Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square), Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook) and Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach).
