Bruce Douglas Boehm, known as “Chappy” to his close friends and family — a nickname he’d been given by his co-lifeguards at Nassau Beach, for the way he kicked his feet when he walked, like comedian Charlie Chaplain’s — was killed on Sept. 11, 2001. He was working at the time as a full-time broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm that was housed on the 101st to 105th floors of the World Trade Center’s north tower.

The Merrick American Legion’s ceremony to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks started solemnly on Sunday with an invocation by Rabbi Paul Kirchner, but surprisingly it ended on an upbeat note when Sacred Heart School sixth-grader Alyssa Pallotta, dressed in a pink dress, took to the podium and sang “God Bless America.” Many in the crowd of 200 spontaneously joined hands and joined in singing this most American of songs.

I write this assuming it will be true for a lot of my readers: September 11, 2001, was the worst day of my life. It was worse for many than it was for me — I was lucky not to lose my father, a roommate and several close friends who all worked in the towers — but the anger and anguish I felt that day were the most intense I’ve ever known.

Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked.

Nine years have passed since that dark moment in our nation’s history. The observance of Sept. 11 continues to be a time for remembrance, healing and solace, and hope for the future. The Herald hopes these photos of victims killed in the terrorist attack who had some connection to Elmont and Franklin Square — some were born and grew up there, lived there as an adult or served in its fire department — will serve to keep their memories alive to a community that still grieves for them.
