South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. The Elmont Dads’ Club/Student Council Food Drive ended on Nov. 18, and on Nov. 19, Gotham Avenue students helped box up food in the Gotham Avenue gym, along with Dads’ Club and Student Council members. More than 100 boxes of food were collected and distributed to families in need in Elmont. more
Nearly 1,000 local residents attended the Rock Out Cures a benefit concert on Sept. 24 at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square. A total of $35,000 was raised — a record amount for the annual event — for the American Cancer Society, the Wounded Warrior Project and the Long Island branches of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network. more

You couldn’t help it.” Tom Bennet Jr. remembers his father, Tom Bennet Sr., fondly today, along with several residents of the Elmont community, for which Tom was a leader and activist for several years. Tom, who resided on Sun Avenue in Elmont, died in January after suffering from a major heart attack. He was 78 years old. more
