The Town of Hempstead incinerates its garbage at the Covanta waste-to-energy plant in Westbury. The ash is then sent to the Town of Brookhaven landfill in Suffolk County. That landfill is expected to close in 2024, which will force Hempstead to find another landfill to dispose of ash, potentially increasing costs and the fees that contractors and landscapers must pay to dispose of their waste.
