The House of Representatives tax-reform bill was passed by a 227 to 205 vote on Nov. 16, paving the way for high-tax suburban regions like Long Island to be hit hard as the legislation would limit or eliminate deductions for property taxes, mortgage interest, and state and local taxes, while much of the rest of the country could see at least modest cuts in their federal tax bills, according to elected local leaders.

Ten years ago, Howard T. Herber Middle School teacher Marguerite Izzo found herself in the office of U.S. Sen. Carolyn McCarthy and began recounting her observations stemming from the No Child Left Behind Act. As she was talking, McCarthy yelled for an aide to grab a notebook and start writing. “I couldn’t believe someone cared,” said Izzo, adding that this was the beginning of legislation to involve teachers in writing federal education policy. “The legislation was introduced two or three times, but never got off the ground,” Izzo said.

Maccabi karate team visits Woodsburgh

Dr. Alex Sternberg and his wife, Ilyse, opened their Woodsburgh home to the U.S. Karate team on May 28 that will be competing in the world Maccabiah Games in July. Sternberg was behind making karate a part of the games in 1977. In contrast, karate will make its Olympic debut in three years.
