It’s still cold on land and water temperatures remain just above freezing, but the Atlantic Beach Rescue Unit and the Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department joined forces and conducted a water rescue drill last Sunday in preparation for when the local waterways are crowded with boats, kayaks, paddle boarders and personal watercraft.

A fire caused by workers using welding equipment in the ceiling of a vacant store at 444 Central Ave. in Cedarhurst was extinguished by the Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere fire departments shortly after 11 a.m. on March 18, LCFD fire officials said.

Seeing a need borne out of Hurricane Sandy, when Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department firefighters had to rescue residents from the second and third floor of their homes due to flooding, students at Mesivta Ateres Yaakov, a yeshiva high school for boys in Lawrence, raised $1,500 in less than a week a few months ago and purchased a rescue boat they presented to the LCFD.
