There were two contested elections for fire commissioner, out of seven local districts holding elections, in both contests the challenger unseated the incumbent. Frank Parise, a former commissioner and department chief defeated Mark Rolon, who was running for his third five-year term. The final tally was 139 votes for Parise and 97 for Rolon.

Peninsula Kiwanis honors volunteer firefighters

Firefighters from the Hewlett, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, Meadowmere Park, Oceanside and Woodmere fire departments were recognized for their volunteer service by the Peninsula Kiwanis Club at the organization’s 43rd annual Fireman’s Awards Night at O’Connell Gardens in Oceanside on Oct. 25.

With Christmas three days away, the federal government acted like Santa Claus, and has provided a $2.4 million grant that the Town of Hempstead will use to repair Meadowmere Park Bridge, which was damaged in Hurricane Sandy more than four years ago.

On Tuesday residents in the Atlantic Beach, Hewlett Bay, Inwood, Meadowmere Park, North Lawrence and Woodmere fire districts can go to the polls and vote for their respective fire commissioners. Most terms are five years, except for special cases. The terms begin on Jan. 1.

It was a monster storm that flooded portions of communities — specifically Meadowmere Park, back Lawrence, Hewlett Harbor and Cedarhurst — and left tens of thousands of lives in tatters. It was traumatic. People felt a visceral sense of fear for weeks, if not months. Could another big storm strike?

LAWRENCE-On Aug. 25 at 10:20 p.m. on Burnside Avenue, Samuel Wattree, 56, of Inwood, was arrested for shoplifting, authorities said.
