Since the exodus from Egypt more than 3,000 year ago, the Jewish people have been commanded to retell the story of Passover to our children, not only in light of the historical events, which occurred, but also in relation to the realities of today.

The 10th annual Greater Long Island Jewish Community tribute to Rev. Martin Luther King at Temple Israel in Lawrence was postponed due to a January snowstorm, but the April 5 celebration of the late Civil Rights leader — on the 45th anniversary of his death — remained an effective reminder of King’s legacy.

These past few weeks have been a most difficult time for our community. Sandy was New York’s Hurricane Katrina, but as a community, we pulled together with that indomitable Jewish chutzpah and New York spirit which shouts in word and deed for all to hear, “You won’t get us — you won’t bring us down — we can take whatever man or nature brings our way and emerge stronger and more resolute than before.” This, too, is the message that our holiday of Hanukkah, through the millennia, has transmitted to the world.
