At 6 p.m. last Sunday, I tore off two layers of plastic sheeting covering the double doors that separate my upstairs living room from my ground-level family room, which are connected by a simple pine staircase. It was a triumphal moment.

Performing to help rebuild the Rockaways

Retrofest 33, a benefit concert organized by Woodmere resident Allan Spielman and sponsored by Long Island Builders, Inc., raised approximately $1,800 that will be donated to Respond & Rebuild in the Rockaways to aid the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy. The five hour event attracted 250 people to the Backstage Nite Club in Woodmere on Dec. 29.

Volunteers from Rebuilding Together Long Island built a wheel chair ramp and performed several home repairs at the house of Hewlett resident Beverly Kessler Erlichman in a project on May 5 sponsored by the Nassau County Bar Association.
