Only a year ago, the New York State Legislature was wrangling behind closed doors over a deal to bail out the fiscally troubled Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The agreement, which imposed a commuter payroll tax on counties served by the MTA, including Nassau County, was supposed to put the authority on a sound financial footing.

Open since May, Monterey has brought to Long Beach a fresh milieu, a décor that orchestrates the “City by the Sea.” While the original structure prevails - bi-level with high, decorative ceilings - the site that once housed Corbin & Reynolds has otherwise been revamped. Now light and airy, the ambience draws on beach-like hues of taupe and aqua. Swirling napery patterns topped with turquoise stemware, grass-cloth menus with matching wall coverings, and iridescent vessel waterfall sinks, are only a few of the stunning additions to behold.

I remember driving west on Park Avenue in Long Beach with my then 1 1/2-year-old daughter tucked in her car seat behind me. It was midday, and the sun shone so brightly. There was a break between the buildings, and through it I could peer toward the destruction.

That end-of-summer tradition in Long Beach is fast approaching. The “City By The Sea” becomes a mecca for jazz lovers, beginning Thursday night, Sept. 10, when the Long Beach Jazz festival, now in its seventh year, takes center stage. A world class cadre of musicians gather at Long Beach Public library, and other venues, for four days devoted to jazz in all its forms.
