First settled in the 1600s, Franklin Square developed as a German-speaking farming community in the late 1800s. In 1650, Christopher and Thomas Foster purchased a large plot of land — including what is now Franklin Square, Elmont and several other surrounding communities — from Dutch settlers, and named it “Fosters Meadow." Fosters Meadow existed for nearly 200 years. more
