The Island Park Business and Residential Chamber of Commerce held its first award dinner-dance Apr. 25 at The Coral House in Baldwin, in a night marked by pride, camaraderie and tears. Five people, who, over the course of their lives, gave to the community through service or enterprise, were honored.

Zombie houses are blight and an expense for our communities. Whether the house was damaged and left after hurricane Sandy, left due to foreclosure, or tied up in an estate or other litigation, they bring the possibility of squatters, environmental hazards, rats and other vermin, fire, and they are an eyesore.

Once again on Feb. 10, attorneys for property owner John Vitale and Waterview Land Development went before the Hempstead town board, seeking to build an apartment complex with 88 one- and two-bedroom units between Waterview Road and Reynolds Channel, on the site of the former Patty McGee’s restaurant.
