While snow usually isn’t an issue for utilities, the possibility of sleet and ice can increase the likelihood of downed wires and resulting power outages. Cars striking utility poles can also cause wires to come down.

At a press conference on Feb. 12 at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola, Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, commissioner of the county Department of Public Works; Jon Kaiman, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s special advisor for Long Island storm recovery; Ed Mangano, the county executive; and Todd Kaminsky, a state assemblyman from Long Beach, announced that the state would provide $150 million to upgrade the Bay Park plant with a nitrogen-removal system.
State promises $150 million to better treat sewage
New York state has pledged to fund the installation of a $150 million nitrogen-removal system at the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, which will reduce the environmental harm of the sewage the plant discharges into Nassau County’s Western Bays, state and county officials said on Feb. 12. The officials, speaking at a Mineola news conference, also called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide $550 million more to build an outfall pipe to carry effluent from Bay Park into the Atlantic Ocean. more

Digging out after the blizzard began on Tuesday. Schools were closed and states of emergency were declared that forced most residents indoors.
More than enough!
The only sounds were the howling wind and the low moan of the horn on the Long Island Rail Road work train trying to clear the tracks. No jets, no cars, no busses, no people. A curfew was in effect and the streets of southwestern Long Island were deserted, save for the occasional plow rumbling though. It started snowing Monday and continued through Tuesday, but fortunately the worst of the storm moved out east. more
