Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal. more

The Nassau County Department of Health is investigating an influenza associated pediatric death of an East Rockaway district student who died last Friday, according to county spokeswoman Mary Ellen Laurain. The student is said to be a five-year-old kindergartner who attended Centre Avenue School in East Rockaway. more

Dana Levitt, of Lynbrook, was one of several student athletes who were honored by the Binghamton University Athletic Department for attaining a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2009 semester. Dana, a sophomore on Women's Track and Field team, is the daughter of Harry and Stacy Levitt of Lynbrook. more
