Five Nassau County gun shop owners –– including an East Meadow resident who owns a shop in Merrick and a Bellmore resident who owns shops in New Hyde Park and Seaford –– have been arrested and charged with illegally selling assault weapons, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Thursday. UPDATE: On April 19, 2012, all charges against Michael Marinello and South Shore Sportsman, Inc., were dismissed by Judge F. Ricigliano in First District Court, Nassau County.

John Lanka, an eighth-grader at Merrick Avenue Middle School, recently won the school-level competition of the 23rd annual National Geographic Society Geography Bee, held on Jan. 6 at the middle school. Lanka outlasted 45 other participants in the event. Thousands of schools around the United States and in five U.S. territories are involved in the contest.

Trucking of raw sewage from Nassau County’s Bay Park treatment plant in East Rockaway to a pumping station on Merrick Road in Merrick is continuing as the county works to fix mechanical problems at the Bay Park plant, said Bill Fonda, a state Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman, in an interview on Thursday.
