Updated: 5:15 p.m., Sept. 9, 2011: An eastbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a New Jersey man at the Merrick train station just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau County police were on hand to investigate with LIRR officials.

With 20 teens by his side, a 20-year old Bellmore man broke down the door of a Merrick home early Saturday morning, intending to assault a 17-year-old resident inside, according to police. The suspect, Joseph Horan, of Boundary Road, was arrested the next day and charged with burglary and criminal mischief.

A 25-year-old male was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle while he was walking on Babylon Turnpike near Smith Street in Merrick on June 20 at 1:35 a.m., according to detectives with the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad. The vehicle operator drove off northbound after hitting the young man.

Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal.
